For 23 Years We’ve Installed and Removed Popcorn Ceilings in Hundreds of Homes Throughout Charlotte.
Homeowners remove the popcorn ceilings in their home for different reasons. Of course, the old look of the popcorn ceiling has long gone out of style. The only time you see popcorn ceilings installed today is in apartments or lower-cost housing where it’s cheaper to install a finish and cover imperfections than it is to do it the right way from the start. So removing the popcorn texture and refinishing the ceiling is a choice most homeowners make today.
But for many homeowners here in Charlotte, it’s more than just giving a home a more modern, updated look.
Popcorn ceilings are known for holding the old, musty smell that’s common with the textured ceilings. These odors can become unpleasant and unhealthy for those living in your home. The reason? The popcorn ceiling finish is mixed with a foam that has a tight grip on the old, musty odors. Without proper removal of the textured finish, the smell is impossible to get rid of.
The problem with textured ceiling or “popcorn” ceiling removal is that it is typically a messy, time-consuming project.
It’s not a job for a DIY homeowner or an inexperienced “handyman.” And if you hire someone who doesn’t understand each step involved to properly remove and finish your ceilings the right way, it can end up causing real issues and costing you more money than you’d hope.
When having your popcorn ceilings removed and refinished, you do NOT want to cut corners.

How to We Ensure Your Textured “Popcorn” Ceiling is Properly Removed and the Ceiling Will Be Finished the Right Way?
The popcorn ceiling removal and drywall finishing system has five levels which we will discuss further when we meet for your estimate:
Level One
Level one is typically how the popcorn ceiling was initially applied. This includes taping all seams and the applying paint. We do not recommend level one in most cases.
Level Three
Level three is our most typical finish level because when a ceiling is scraped, there will be indentations and imperfections that must be concealed. Level three includes removal of textured ceiling, taping all corners and seams, and applying one coat of mud followed by a skim coat over the tape for a smooth finish.
Level Four
Most of our work is done at level four (typically for flat paints). We’ll remove textured ceiling and tape all corners and seams, apply one coat of mud followed by a skim coat over the tape. A second finishing skim coat is applied to smooth over all screws or nails.
Level Five
For eggshell or semi-gloss paint, level five is required. This is where we remove your popcorn ceiling and tape all corners and seams, apply one coat of mud followed by two skim coats of the entire ceiling area. Each skim coat is applied in opposite directions to provide the smoothest, highest-quality finish prior to applying your paint.
